Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. 지금, 튀르키예 건축 Turkish Architecture Now • 왜 지금, 여기서 튀르키예 건축일까. 직선거리 8천km에 6시간이 엇갈린 낮과 밤을 살고 있는 나라. 그 시공간적 거리보다, 유럽과 아시아 어느 한쪽에도 완전히 속하지 않는 정체성, 그리고 이슬람 문화권이라는 고정관념으로 우리는 튀르키예에 대한 상상을 게을리하진 않았나? 하지만 도시의 역사적 층위를 뒤덮은 개발 논리와 사유화된 공공 공간, 정치적 불안정성, 지역 불균형의 심화, 지진과 재난의 끊임없는 위험까지, 최근 20여 년간 튀르키예가 겪고 있는 도시 현상을 나열하다 보면 분명한 기시감에 등골이 서늘해진다. 아시아의 동과 서를 가로질러 공명하는 문제의식. 그 가운데 튀르키예 건축계는 어떤 질문을 던지며, 어떤 응답을 내놓고 있을까? 「SPACE(공간)」는 2024 서울대-목천 강연과 연계해 튀르키예 현대건축의 복잡다단한 지형 속 양극단의 좌표를 점하는 두 사무소 EAA와 SO?를 주목한다. 더불어 변화하는 건축 환경에 발맞춰 등장해 실천적 언어를 구축해가고 있는 건축 그룹들의 다채로운 스펙트럼을 함께 소개한다. Why the focus on Turkish architecture now, and here? A country located a distance of 8,000km away, in a straight line, where the days and nights are six hours behind us; aside from this spatial and temporal distance, have we neglected the imaginative potential to be found in Türkiye by confining its identity as neither fully European nor Asian and its cultural affiliations to the Islamic? However, when we start to make a list of the urban phenomena experienced in Türkiye over the last two decades, such as the development logic that has overshadowed historical cities, the privatisation of public spaces, political instability, deepening regional imbalance, and the constant risk of earthquakes and environmental disasters, we are struck with a spine-chilling déjà vu. Within a shared sense of critical awareness resonates across the east and west of Asia, what questions is Turkish architectural community asking, and what answers does it offer? In line with the 2024 SNU-MOKCHON Lectures, SPACE turns its focus to EAA and SO?, two architectural practices that mark opposite poles on the complex and multifaceted landscape of contemporary Turkish architecture. This FEATURE also introduces the broad spectrum of emerging architects who are developing their own practice-led design languages in response to their shifting architectural environment.
